Dryer fire in Wengatz Hall

Facilities restored after inspection

Police and a fire truck arrived outside Wengatz Hall after smoke from a dryer triggered the fire alarm on Sunday night, March 30.

“There was lint built up in the ventilation, and something within the clothes section of the dryer (that) was flammable, and, due to the heat, it combusted and melted the plastics,” Jacob Neu, Wengatz Hall Director, said.

A student’s clothes were singed from the incident and Taylor University is working on reimbursing the student for damages, Neu said. Besides the dryer and damaged clothes, there was no extraneous damage done inside to Wengatz.

The next day, the residents of Wengatz were notified via email that with the dryers being depleted, Samuel Morris Hall would be open for laundry.

“Taylor shut down the dryers in Wengatz until they were properly inspected by the WASH maintenance technician,” Neu said.

Neu notified Wengatz hall via email that the laundry room was back to fully functional on Wednesday, April 2.
