Upland attained 6.787 acres to the town jurisdiction.
The Upland town council approved the voluntary annexation of land on Upland’s border in Jefferson Township, Grant County. Additionally, Lots 1-13 of the Taylor University Eighth Street subdivision are being annexed. All the landowners signed the voluntary annexation petition.
The town council found the proposed annexation in the best interest of Upland’s citizens and the owner of the annexation area, Shawn Sizemore, president of the Upland Town Council, said.
Upland is undergoing three different scopes of roadwork, Town Manager Jonathan Perez said. Upland won two Community Crossing Matching Grants last year from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).
INDOT awarded Upland $1,058,410.35 for local roads and streets, according to IN.gov.
Perez said the projects’ preliminary work begins south of the train tracks in Upland, alongside the sidewalk project.
“On top of that,” Perez said, “we're working with the state's contractor to help address the beating that Eighth Street's taking because of it (the detour). That's our road and our responsibility, but they understand that it's their detour that's significantly causing damage to our road.”
The meeting concluded with the council members appreciating Labor Day weekend’s success.
Council member Amy McCrea said there seemed to be activities happening at each hour — from the Upland Public Library’s groundbreaking, NearSpace Education’s new facility tour and the Labor Day parade down Main Street.
“From the ribbon cutting to the parade — everything was great,” McCrea said.
The next Upland Town Council meeting will meet at 6:30 p.m. on September 16.
