Janie Kesler dies at 89

Leaves behind legacy of servant leadership

Helen Jane “Janie” Kesler (‘59) died July 1, 2025, at the age of 89.

Kesler, alumna and former First Lady of Taylor University passed away after a brief illness, President Michael Lindsay said in an email to the university.

She served alongside her husband Jay Kesler during his 15-year presidency (1985-2000. The pair were ever-present at campus events, encouraging hospitality and fellowship among staff and students.

Kesler had the heart of a servant, evident in the way she touched people’s lives in not only action, but prayer and spirit. She was active on campus and in the community as she attended Bible studies and had a ministry of prayer.

Taylor University awarded Kesler a doctorate of public service, honoris causa, in 2022. The degree recognizes her as an ambassador for the university and model of servant-leadership.

Visitation and services were held Monday, July 7, at Upland Community Church in Upland,  Indiana.

“We continue to grieve the loss of a remarkable woman whose life of grace, prayer, and quiet encouragement touched so many,” Lindsay said. “Yet even in our sorrow, we hold fast to the hope we have in Jesus—that we will see Janie again and rejoice together in His presence.”
