Broken water line shuts down Stu

Issue resolved quickly

Wednesday evening Taylor faculty and students received an email at 6:51 p.m. informing them dining and restrooms were closed in the LaRita Boren Campus Center (the Stu) due to a water break.

A contractor working on the new chapel and welcome center accidentally hit a water line to the Stu while digging, causing a water leak, Chris Jones, vice president, chief of staff and chief information officer said.

Dining and restroom facilities had to close due to the water break. Because the buildings next to the Stu were unaffected by the water break and still had working bathrooms, the whole building was not shut down, Jones said. The Taylor community was alerted to the closure through a TUAlert message.

Thursday morning, the repair company arrived and began repairing the leak, Jones said.

By 1:50 p.m., the Taylor community received an email saying repairs were finished and the restrooms were usable again, according to an email update Jones sent to Taylor faculty, students and staff.

Dining reopened about an hour or two later.

Taylor dining did not seem to be significantly affected.

“Employees who work in Boren did not need to relocate, as the building was safe to occupy,” Jones wrote in an email. “But they did need to use restrooms in nearby buildings such as Rupp and Smith-Hermanson. Other dining venues saw some increased lines due to Boren being closed, but there were no significant issues reported, and operations across campus continued smoothly.”

Taylor doesn’t anticipate ongoing issues, Jones said.
