Women's basketball head coach Jody Martinez retires

Coach Cassie Wiseman steps in

Taylor University Athletics has hired a new women’s basketball head coach.

In the recent departure of former head coach Jody Martinez, the Trojans have found a new home for Cassie Wiseman.

Wiseman coached high school basketball at Heritage Christian High School. She led the Eagles from 2020-2023, leading to a sectional championship in 2022 followed by a runner-up performance a year later. In her last year, she took her ball club to a city championship, naming her the 2023 Indianapolis City Coach of the Year.

Before beginning her career in coaching, Wiseman was quite the basketball star herself. In high school, she played for Heritage, garnering a scoring record of 1,783 total points, acquiring a 2004 McDonald’s All-American nomination and attaining Indiana Basketball All-Star honors. She went on to play at Butler, playing all but one game (117 of 118) in her time being a Bulldog.

Following into the head coaching role will not be easy. As Martinez retires, he holds a record of 133 wins and 54 losses in his six years coaching for the Trojans. His total win-loss record is 542-238, which sits in him the eighth spot in the NAIA amongst women’s basketball coaches.

Among the former coach’s notable accomplishments in his six years at Taylor were three separate national tournament runs, including a round of eight showing, only the second in program history. His teams captured a Crossroads League Championship and two 30-win seasons of the six he coached.

Martinez was also recognized by being named the 2018-19 WBCA NAIA National Coach of the year, as he was creating the Trojans into a winning program, with a record 97 victories across four years, and getting as high as the fifth spot in national polls.

Martinez left a legacy — and Wiseman is here to continue leading it. Her expertise of success, both for herself and the teams she’s coached, leaves a great fit for a winning culture to arise once again for the Trojans in this coming 2023-24 campaign.
