How to make the most of the coldest month on campus

By Angelina Burkholder

One month, one class and all the time in the world: J-term. It's a confusing set-up to get used to and for first-timers, it can seem a little daunting. So take a deep breath, relax and know it's been accomplished before.

In Class

Most professors only teach one class during J-term, so ask for some extra help. Your grades will improve and you can better get to know some of the faculty on campus. If you have any questions about next semester, or long term goals, now is also the time to ask. Schedule an appointment with your advisor or a trusted professor; they will be more available during this month.

Around Campus

During J-term, hours for certain venues vary slightly. For instance, the hours for the Dining Commons are just a little shorter with lunch ending at 1:30 p.m. and dinner only lasting until 6:30 p.m. The DC also has food choices narrowed down a bit to avoid waste and save money. But don't worry too much, the full menu will be back full-swing once February arrives.

On the other hand, the KSAC and academic buildings follow their same semester hours during January. However, if the pool is something you wish to utilize, the hours are just a little different. Lap swimming is extended in the morning until 9 a.m. and again from 11:45 to 12:45 p.m.

Down-Sized

Beyond the changes, consider the down-sized numbers on campus to be a blessing. Less people equals more space. If you haven't taken advantage of The Well, Taylor's exercise and lifting room, do so now when it's bound to be more empty. Less people also mean shorter lines and more open tables. Sit somewhere new in the DC and enjoy the new perspective or hop in line at the Jumping Bean, Taylor's coffee shop, and try a yummy drink.

Travel Time

Since J-term usually results in more free time, make some crazy plans with friends. Expand beyond Upland and take advantage of the surrounding areas. Plan a fun day in Fort Wayne or Indianapolis, or expand even more, and plan a weekend road trip out of state.

If none of these ideas appeal to you and J-term just isn't feeling right, bypass the road trips and plan to try something new next year. Research where Taylor sent Lighthouse teams and academic trips this year and figure out if that's something you would like to pursue for J-term 2014. But for now, kick back and enjoy some hot cocoa or a snowball fight, second semester and normal routine will be here in a matter of weeks.
